The Great Debate: Rose Vs. Beasley

Superstars sell NBA Tickets and that’s what teams are looking to find in the NBA Draft. This year’s top selection belongs to the Chicago Bulls and it seems that the decision of who to take will come down to two players, Memphis point guard Derrick Rose and Kansas State forward Michael Beasley.
Rose is an unbelievable talent. He has speed, good size for the position, incredible athleticism and excellent court vision. He’s a leader, a winner and a guy you don’t have to worry about off the court. Rose led Memphis to the national championship game in his freshman season with the Tigers during which he averaged 14.9 points, 4.5 rebound and 4.7 assists. The numbers don’t just him justice though, as his team was full of good players and NBA prospects and he just did whatever was necessary to win, not just to get his. He’s humble, a hard worker and plays team basketball.
Beasley on the other hand is a bit arrogant. He seems a little full of himself and doesn’t look to take anything too seriously. But his freshman season at K-State was very impressive. Beasley averaged 26.2 points and 12.4 rebounds, but the team struggled all season long. There appear to be no holes in Beasley’s offensive game as he can bang down low, play the midrange game and extend out to three-point land. He can probably play both the 3 and the 4 in the pros, making him that much more attractive to NBA teams. Beasley may carry some baggage though, as he’s been accused of being immature and not the hardest worker. There have been some Derrick Coleman comparisons being thrown around and that could cause some hesitation from teams for fear that he’d never realize his potential ala Coleman. He’s too talented to slip out of the top three though and likely won’t slip past the second pick.
I think the choice for the Bulls is Rose. Beasley would fit more of a need on the court, as the Bulls have lacked low post scoring since they shipped Elton Brand to the Clippers, but most NBA teams take the best player available. There have been some highly-documented draft day mistakes made due to selecting players based on need over talent. Everyone knows the Blazers passed on Michael Jordan because they had Clyde Drexler. The Bucks passed on Chris Paul in 2005 to take Andrew Bogut because they had T.J. Ford at the time. Three years later the Bucks are in the lottery and no longer have T.J. Ford on their roster. Chris Paul might be the best point guard in the league already and the Hornets made it to the Western Conference semis this year. I think Rose is the better overall prospect and the Bulls shouldn’t pass on him just because they have Kirk Hinrich. Plus he’s a hometown kid so he’ll help sell NBA tickets in Chicago.
Rose also seems to fit the mold as far as the kind of player that John Paxson looks for much more than Beasley and should put the Bulls right back in playoff contention. I think that if the Bulls took Beasley, three years we’d be looking back and wondering how they passed on Rose while the Heat (who pick at #2) would be the luckiest team in the league for having Rose fall into the their laps. Regardless of who they take, the Bulls will certainly be able to sell more NBA tickets with one of these stud rookies on the roster.
